Professional Organizer?
I was thinking that being a professional organizer would be a fun job since I love organization and all of that stuff, but I was just wondering approx. how much they make a year? Also, do you need a college degree to be a professional organizer?
I think you’re on to something with professional organization….more than people w/messy garages are going to need your services as more and more of us are working from home.
A college degree is always a great idea – it seems to lend legitimacy to any enterprise. I would suggest marketing, business, or even design ….whatever suits your educational aspirations. I don’t think you need to have completed your degree to get started though….and I’m almost positive there is a professional organization for Organizers. You might look into what they require for membership.
I am an interior designer, and I often have to call in an organizer (or do it myself) to a clients home before I can even get started on the job. People just don’t know what to do with all their stuff! As far as what you can earn – I think approach is important….anyone could Organize an office, to some extent, if they had a whole week to do it – but even if you only charged $10/hr, that timeline is going to be offputting to most people. However, if you marketed to busy professionals, charged a daily fee (say $500?), worked like crazy from 7 am to dinner time, and got the job done and got out of their way, they probably wouldn’t hesitate to hire you. Show them what it’s costing them to not be organized (Money, time, enjoyment ), and include as part of your service a list of suggested storage items to help them maintain, a photograph of the completed effort so the image sticks in their mind, and a must-do checklist of the things they must do daily in order to keep the space orderly and efficient. In short, I think you can earn a nice living if you do a good job, and could probably set up a few people working under you for smaller, less intense jobs.
Good luck!
