Why can’t Magic the Gathering judges and organizers play in there own tournaments?

I became an organizer not to long ago not realizing that rule. My friend’s and I play FNM at the next town over and the judge plays there. Am I missing something?

Just recently, actually, Wizards/ DCI changed the ruling on this problem. Now, judges and organizers can legally play in their own tournaments, when they see fit. I am not completely sure on this fact, as I myself have heard many different stories, but I’m pretty sure that this change was made.
