About The National Association Of Enrolled Agents (NAEA)

The National Association of Enrolled Agents (NAEA) is an organization whose members are tax professionals with an EA license. The mission of NAEA is enhancement of the role for Enrolled Agents. To achieve this goal, NAEA is a taxpayer advocate and leader in establishing public understanding of the value Enrolled Agents provide.

NAEA is dedicated to maintaining a high skill level for its members by emphasizing enrolled agent continuing education. Members of NAEA complete a minimum of 30 enrolled agent hours annually as NAEA CPE.

Any tax agent course for a member of NAEA also applies to EA CPE requirements of the IRS. However, the NAEA CPE requirement exceeds the IRS standard. Tax preparers registered by the California Tax Education Council also complete annual CPE. CA enrolled agents meet the CTRC CPE by completing courses required of NAEA membership.

NAEA emphasizes knowledge and skill in all areas of tax in order to assure that its members effectively represent taxpayers with the IRS. The organization recognizes that enrolled agents are tax experts who specialize in this area of finance. The tax knowledge of Enrolled Agents includes expertise about both personal and business taxes.

Consequently, NAEA seeks to inform the public about the distinctive position of Enrolled Agents. These are the only tax professionals federally authorized to perform the dual function of preparing tax returns and representing taxpayers during IRS audits and collection efforts.

The NAEA commitment to education of its members recognizes that the tax code constantly changes. In addition, there are frequent adjustment in IRS procedures relating to collections and appeals. Enrolled Agents have unrestricted authority to represent taxpayers in these matters.

IRS licensing of Enrolled Agents requires passing the Special Enrollment Exam or having employment experience with the IRS involving particular duties. Applicants for Enrolled Agent status are also subjected to an extensive background check by the IRS.

Enrolled Agent ethics is also an important aspect of NAEA membership. The association requires its members to adhere to the NAEA code of ethics. Therefore, ethics courses are completed by Enrolled Agents in addition to tax courses.

NAEA serves an important function to Enrolled Agents by assuring a high standard of professionalism plus representing member interests to the government and the public.
